Social moves fast, and so does social media news. Here are our favourite news shorts from this week in SM.
Developed to entice publishers to create content directly within the platform itself, Instant Articles haven’t quite had the impact Facebook would have wanted so far. And just over a year since Instant Articles were introduced to Messenger, the social giant is now removing them to focus content type within the flagship app instead.
… the battle between the sister services is heating up. Facebook Messenger has hit 1.3bn monthly users – the same number as WhatsApp. Despite the social media giant owning both applications, user growth of 30% since July is reinforced Facebook’s dominance of the social landscape.
How long before ads start popping up in our Messenger chats?
More good news for a social mainstay as Pinterest announces it has reached 200 million active users, up 25% in a year.
Pinterest co-founder, Evan Sharp, took the opportunity to announce continued platform development in a blog post, including a board sections feature set to roll out in the coming weeks.
Digital ad spend surpassed TV spend last year for the first time, and Facebook are keen to show advertisers exactly how ads on its platform generate them cash.
COO Sheryl Sandberg told The Drum: “We’re really working on measurement, and that’s something we have a lot of work to do on, and the industry has been focused on proxy metrics such as how long people watch video, or how affiliated are they with a brand, and those are important – and we know we have to improve there.”
American home improvement warehouse brand Lowe’s manufactured their own Instagram Story-dimensioned space to decorate this month.
